CASINO ROYALE (1967)

This is the worst James Bond film ever made. It is a spoof of the James Bond phenomenon and that means it's supposed to be a comedy, but it completely fails on both fronts. As for the classic era (1962 to 2002) of the EON James Bond film productions, MOONRAKER (1979) ranks as the worst film in this series, but at least it was entertaining. Charles K. Feldman's Columbia Films production of CASINO ROYALE is definitely NOT entertaining -- it is an elephantine monstrosity that is a complete bore. I've tried to watch this several times, but it only puts me to sleep. In my last attempt to watch this film -- about 34 years ago -- it not only put me fast asleep but also my roommate. In short, CASINO ROYALE is a totally reliable cure for insomnia. If the EON producers hadn't failed back in the early sixties to acquire the film rights to Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, Feldman and company wouldn't have assaulted audiences with this ridiculous waste of celluloid. If you really feel like punishing yourself by watching this film, just skip to the part with Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress on that rental DVD. But first, watch the CBS Climax Mystery Theater television production of CASINO ROYALE from 1954 on that same rental DVD. This TV adaptation stars Barry Nelson as "card sense Jimmy Bond," an American agent. Yes, you read that right: an AMERICAN agent. Hmmmm. But at least this rather creaky live television drama is somewhat interesting and entertaining -- and that's a whole lot more than the theatrical feature presentation from 1967! 'Nuff said -- except the original movie poster is kind of cool. |
